Kuedo (Jamie Vex’d) mix for Resident Advisor

without comments

I’ve been subscribed to Resident Advisor’s podcasts for a while now and I’ve yet to be disappointed by any of them. When iTunes let me know that a new one under the name of Kuedo was available for download, I decided to choose it as the background music for the design work I was completing at that time. What was transmitted from my M-Audio monitors to my ears to my brain was most stimulating; neither dubstep, not grime, nor glitch, nor IDM, but a fusing of all of these styles and more permeated my mind like a psychedelic dye.

Upon doing some research to write this post, I have discovered that Kuedo is actually half of one of my all time favorite production outfits ever – it’s Jamie from Vex’d! They are the reason I got into dubstep, grime and even house and garage. So it makes perfect sense now that after probably 15 listens in the last 3 days that this mix has affected my mind in such a way that Vex’d did four years ago.

without comments

My favorite Oakland, CA hiphop group is back with a new album after 10 years! Souls of Mischief are have released “Monezuma’s Revenge”, which is produced by Prince Paul, via Del’s label Hieroglyphics.

They’re promoting the album by giving out the single “Proper Aim” via XLR8R.

Download the tune and make sure to get your hands on a copy of the album if you’re a fan of the crew.

Mayday – “Technology”

without comments

1381381440-1

This free release from Miami’s dopest hiphop band, Mayday, has been out for a few months but my slackin ass has finally gotten around to giving it load in the old iTunes. I’ve had the pleasure of catching them live a couple of times in Miami and they always rock the house with their brand up upbeat-yet-chillin hip-pop stylings, so it’s a pleasure to have the experience captured in this 6 song release. You too can have a copy via their BandCamp profile.

They recently were cast to play the live band in a Lil Wayne video, which you can watch below. If they continue power moves like this, you can guarantee they’ll soon become a household name.

If you are not acquainted with hiphop DJ Paul Pre, it’s time you’ve been introduced. My current favorite hiphop DJ, Mr. Pre resides in Germany and has a dozen or so of his sets available on hist website – I suggest you designate a few gigs of space to downloading all of them and witness the laid back, sometimes wonky spectrum of hiphop he weaves smoothly together.

Black Keys and hiphop artist collab: BLAKROC

without comments

TheBlackKeys-02-big

Bluesy-rock band The Black Keys have teamed up with ex-Roc-A-Fella Records exec Damon Dash, producing  project with some of your favorite hiphop artists, including Billy Danze, The Black Keys, Jim Jones, Nicole Wray, NOE, Ludacris, Mos Def, ODB, Pharoahe Monch, Q-Tip, Raekwon, & RZA. Apparently the album was recorded in earlier this year and uses nothing but live instrumentation. You can download a copy of the tune they did with Mos Def and Jim Jones to get a taste of what to expect from the full release.

The album is set to release on November 27th, but you can pre-order a copy here.

On how the project got started, Dam Dash says:

“My assistants, who are now actually A&Rs, were going to a Black Keys concert for their birthday and I wasn’t invited,” he explained. “Usually on their birthdays we all do it together and the reason why I wasn’t invited was because the concert was sold out . And I had never heard of The Black Keys and I was like y’all still gonna go without me. And they was like ‘Yo it’s The Black Keys.” So I was like, lemme hear this group. So I start listening to them and they actually became my favorite group. They were on heavy rotation so we just reached out and we kicked it with them and I was like, ‘I wonder what would happen if we got Jim Jones and the Keys in the studio’ and Jim came in and all of a sudden Mos came in and then [it] just built from there. “
