Bombaman Interview

Matt Carl is Bombaman, a Canadian dj and producer making electronic music that is a hybrid of dubstep, house and other forms that have yet to be confined by a genre name. He’s had his tunes played by big names such as Rusko, Diplo and Crookers and was kind enough to answer a few questions for us.
1. How long have you been making music, and how long have you been DJing, and why/how did you start?
Been making music for 13 years, dj’ing for about 10. Got started dj’ing around 1998 or so playing dnb and hardcore/gabber kinda stuff. I started dj’ing just cuz I liked the music so much, I wanted to know who was doing what and shit, so I started buying records.
2. The styles of music that you play tend to lie in the fringes of defined genres in electronic music – how would you describe your sound to someone that is not in tune with modern electronic music?
Oh god, worst question for me, ever.
I would describe my style as afrobeat/kuduru kind of shit mixed with digital fuckery. I like the beats from UK funky and house and shit, but I like digital, distorted sounds so I just try and fuse them both together.
3. You’ve got some pretty big names playing your tunes – Crookers, Rusko, Diplo, 12th Planet, DZ, Starkey, Stenchman, the Trouble & Bass crew. How has the internet and your radio show helped you reach out to new audiences?
If it weren’t for the internet, I think it’s safe to say I wouldn’t be where I am at, having these guys playing the tunes in the first place. I just send out shit to people who I think might like it, but it doesn’t matter if they do or don’t, I just want to make stuff I can play. Turns out the stuff I want to make so I can play it is the same kinda shit higher up dj’s also want to play!
