Janner

without comments

Veteran music-maker Janner has been producing for over a decade.  Moving from drum and bass to dubstep, breakbeats and garage, Janner’s music is melodic, driving and above all thoughtful.

What inspired you to start producing music and what are some of your influences?

i’ve been producing for about 12 years now after being in bands etc as I was growing up. i had always been into baggy indie bands like the stone roses and  started to get into beaty stuff like the chemical brothers… then when i left home for uni i started buying music gear so that i could produce solo. When i started producing (1998) i didn’t even have a PC, just outboard gear. what inspired me was a desire to create and record music on my own, as the last band i had been in was still back home in plymouth. once i got to uni in Manchester, dnb became an increasingly significant influence. then around 2000 i was into the dark garage and breaks that was coming out around that time, and hip hop… and eventually after i moved to Brussels, dubstep happened.

What is one of your best ‘music moments’ (ie concert/show you attended, gig you dj’d)?

One of my best music moments was going to see Asian Dub Foundation in 1998 at the Cooperage in Plymouth. that was my first proper exposure to fast programmed beats and dubwise sounds. the fact that they operated as a band made it more accessible to me at the time this is probably when dnb first started to creep into my head. other than that, seeing Ed Rush and Optical at the Music Box in Manchester on the Wormhole tour…. wow, that was dark! seeing Radiohead on the OK Computer tour… and also seeing some more obscure late-90s beats/rock crossover “skunk rock” outfits like Bedlam Ago Go and the Lo-Fidelity Allstars. these all had a big impact on me.

What inspires you, musically or otherwise?

In terms of music, at the moment i am really feeling 2-step rhythms, more emotive melodies & 8-bit sounds. i’m also feeling the autonomic stuff that has been getting so much attention recently. outside of music i’m definitely inspired by books, especially sci-fi by authors such as William Gibson, Adam Roberts, Iain M. Banks, Neal Stephenson. i also get off on landscapes and scenery, both country and city. and art – favourites include Schiele and Klimt.
