Bombaman Interview

Matt Carl is Bombaman, a Canadian dj and producer making electronic music that is a hybrid of dubstep, house and other forms that have yet to be confined by a genre name. He’s had his tunes played by big names such as Rusko, Diplo and Crookers and was kind enough to answer a few questions for us.
1. How long have you been making music, and how long have you been DJing, and why/how did you start?
Been making music for 13 years, dj’ing for about 10. Got started dj’ing around 1998 or so playing dnb and hardcore/gabber kinda stuff. I started dj’ing just cuz I liked the music so much, I wanted to know who was doing what and shit, so I started buying records.
2. The styles of music that you play tend to lie in the fringes of defined genres in electronic music – how would you describe your sound to someone that is not in tune with modern electronic music?
Oh god, worst question for me, ever.
I would describe my style as afrobeat/kuduru kind of shit mixed with digital fuckery. I like the beats from UK funky and house and shit, but I like digital, distorted sounds so I just try and fuse them both together.
3. You’ve got some pretty big names playing your tunes – Crookers, Rusko, Diplo, 12th Planet, DZ, Starkey, Stenchman, the Trouble & Bass crew. How has the internet and your radio show helped you reach out to new audiences?
If it weren’t for the internet, I think it’s safe to say I wouldn’t be where I am at, having these guys playing the tunes in the first place. I just send out shit to people who I think might like it, but it doesn’t matter if they do or don’t, I just want to make stuff I can play. Turns out the stuff I want to make so I can play it is the same kinda shit higher up dj’s also want to play!

4. The tune you did with 6Blocc was really dope – “Flower People/Dead Flowers remix”. How did that collaboration come about and do you have any forthcoming releases that we should know about?
I think I made flower people after hearing “trapped in a dark bubble” by Skream. I wanted to make a tune with the same kinda drum rhythm and the same kind of vibes…dark, brooding, moody shit. So I went ahead and made “Flower People” and just kinda sent it around a bit to see what people were saying. Got some good responses, so I started playing it out more, on the radio show and live and shit. La Dubstep Nostra man dem hit me up, asked if I wanted to put it out with a remix by 6blocc, and of course I said yes. There you go, history is made.
Forthcoming stuff…aye yi yi…Loads of remixes such as my remix of “My Cpu” by Phatcat coming out on Future Roots, my remix of “Floaters” by Darling Farah coming out on Idiot House, who is also putting out an unfinished EP of my own. My remix of “Chicago” by J Courage coming out on Trenchant. I did a remix for Peroxide Mocha, tune called “Killer B’s” which Si Begg also remixed, huge tune. Me and Egyptrixx have a split 12″ coming out on Aufect with his tune “Origins” and my tune “One of Everything.” And me and XI just put out a split 12″ on Aufect featuring the tunes “Hardwave” and my remix of Times Neue Romans “To die.”

5. Describe the dream show/event/party that you’d like to play at.
I don’t even know…some massive festival with 500,000 people and lots of lights and booze and stuff.
