Jazzsteppa Interview

Jazzsteppa are an electronic music act that implement elements of live jazz into their recorded music and live sets. They currently have tunes signed to Hot Flush Recordings, Studio Rockers as well as releasing on their own Jazzsteppa imprint.
This brief interview was conducted by email a few months ago, but due to technology problems we were unable to present it to you until now. I have left their responses unedited, as you will be able to tell soon.
1. How long have you guys been playing music together? What roles do each of you play in the band?
Gal.B: Been playin since the age of 11, had a break 3 years for the fukin military- but were back on trk ![]()
Gal.M: As for roles…. I guess BArbz is Like posh Steppa, and i am sporty steppa.. we lookin for AFro steppa as we speak..
2. What drove you to perform live jazz elements over electronic music?
Gal.B: first time i heard Dubstep.. im talkin 2005; Found it really boring.. so was obvious to me that it needs be played by musicians.. Real music.
Gal.M: yeah… first rave in Plastic people- shitheaded on K. Heard the jazz.. Its always there for me; in any kind of music..

3. Where has your favorite show been performed? Any where you’d love to play that you haven’t yet?
Gal.B: Our gig in Tel-aviv few months ago.. Played there 2 days before the last war- people were fuckin insane.
Gal.M: would love to play in the Olympics 2012. I live just round the corner in Stratford; would sort em out a cheap fee.
4. Do you guys have any dream collaborations with other artists?
Gal.B: Been tryin to hook up with Tzion Golan for a while now.
Gal.M: Would be cool to get a session with Roots Manuva.. Or a music video starring Taylor Rain.
5. Any thoughts on the potential of commercialization of dubstep (re: Snoop Dog/Chase + Status collab), some perspective on the future of dubstep music?
Gal.B: We wanna start working with a big band, do some more oldies and jazz standards, I think the next level should be a philharmonic orchestra….
Gal.M: Everything is commercial these days, Economics is an essential aspect of creativity, distribution, society and human emotion… ye… I don’t know.

6. Describe a day in the life of Jazzsteppa!
Gal.B: Wake up early to catch a cheap Easyjet from Berlin, meet new promoter (somewhere), meet Gal M from London, Lunch, Soundcheck, check out some of Gal’s new Beats, go to sleep, wake up 25 minutes before stage time, play gig, go to sleep too late.. Miss the flight back
Gal.M: … I’m new everyday, born in the morning, age severly throughout the day, die at night.. and so on…
Here’s some live Jazzsteppa for your face!
