John W. Gregory II, better known as somejerk, has quickly made a name for himself in the dubstep and bass music communities. Originally a graphic designer and promoter, he found his DJ calling during the begining of Florida’s dubstep phenomenon, opening for international acts such as Skream, Mala, Hatcha, Joe Nice, Platician and countless others, all while producing and releasing original music. Currently he has seen a return to promoting and has his hand in a number of dubstep and drum & bass events in Florida.
Born and raised in Hollywood, John spent most of his public education years in performing art schools, being formally taught music theory and how to play piano. In middle school he was exposed to punnk rock and skateboard culture, and later hiphop and reggae. In high school he played in punk rock bands and freestyled over blunts and Old English malt liquor. Once the bands he was playing in dismantled he found himself trying to imitate the hiphop beats he had grown to love, and soon became obsessed with drum and bass, jungle, downtempo, IDM and other forms of electronic music.
After a few years of throwing small parties, designing and promoting for various promoters and clubs, John was given the chance to start a weekly mixed genre bass party in Ft Lauderdale at the now defunct Roxanne’s. This was the first time that dubstep was played in Broward county and was one of the more experimental parties to occur in Broward, mixing top local DJ’s from drum and bass, jungle, dubstep, IDM, breaks, electro, downtempo and hiphop. Due to politics and then some sort of fire, the Age of Roxaanne’s and new challenges and oppportunites would soon arise. In September of that same year, John was given a chance to open for dubstep legends Skream and Mala and stepped up. Within a matter of months, John found him self booked at, if not organizing and promoting, most of the dubstep parties that were occuring in Miami, and then being booked in Tampa, Ft Lauderdale and Orlando.
More time passes and dubstep is pushed harder and harder by more people. Some heads come, some heads go, but the core group pushes through the hate and dubstep finally pops during the Winter Music Conference of 2009. By this point John has had releases on Filthy Digital, Insectmind and has released, through AIM dub culture, countless original dubstep tunes as well as remixes and ecclectic bass music selections.
